In Feb 2000, Mandy Hooker returned to her family home in Northamptonshire, bringing with her over twenty-five years experience of rescuing dogs - particularly greyhounds – and running rescue kennels. She was desperately looking to establish a place where she could rescue greyhounds in the area. She was paying for her petrol in a local garage when she was told about a site that was likely to become available soon and which might be suitable for her purpose. She rushed to visit the place and meet the owner. Soon she was signing a rental agreement and setting to work to make the place suitable for taking in rescued greyhounds.
It took seven weeks of hard work and fund raising for what was needed. An electricity generator was bought and installed at a cost of £4,000. Runs were built for the kennels and a fenced exercise area was created. This cost an eventual further £4,000. Large raised wooden box beds were installed in each kennel. Heat lamps were purchased. Gradually the area was turned into a thriving rescue. A cluster of warm, comfortable kennels was established. The monthly rental alone is £1000 and this is before paying for the necessary utilities i.e. water, heating, telephone etc. All of these costs need to be met before beginning on the most important task of caring for the Greyhounds themselves.
The word spread, and soon many people were coming to visit – some to tie an unwanted greyhound at the gatepost, but many many more with kind offers of homes, or armfuls of petfood or blankets. Some came to enjoy the companionship of the animals – many to roll up their sleeves and to lend a willing hand. The spirit of local participation and support continues today and gives N.G.R. its very special character.
